Thanks to a response from Sammy Ando, one of my readers in Ierapetra, The following information on Chrissy Island has come to light: In 2022, the Greek government took a decisive step to protect the pristine beauty and fragile ecosystem of Chrissy Island in Ierapetra by temporarily closing it to tourists from May 1st to October 31st annually. This decision was made in response to the alarming discovery of significant amounts of refuse and litter dumped on the island, a disheartening sight that tarnished the once unspoiled haven. By restricting access to the island during the peak tourist season, the government aimed to not only allow for a thorough cleanup but also to emphasize the importance of environmental responsibility among visitors.

The island of Chrysi in Lasithi faces legal battles over the action plan to protect its natural landscape. Kaloust Paragamian, a key figure in protecting the island and coordinator of the Implementation and Monitoring Committee, has been targeted by the Municipality of Ierapetra and local businessmen. Mass tourism has resulted in various criminal activities, including illegal constructions and environmental degradation. On May 11th, 20 illegal structures were demolished and a large amount of garbage was removed. An action plan was implemented to protect the island, prohibiting visitors from disembarking from tourist ships and private boats between May 1st and October 31st, 2022. The Municipality of Ierapetra has appealed against the action plan, siding with the businessmen affected by the measures. The mayor filed a lawsuit against Paragamian, who has also reported threats against him and his family. The issue will now be resolved in the courts.

So right now, 2023 boats may still go to the area, and you could swim to the island and sit on the beach. But effectively, Chrissi Island is closed.
